Summer is drawing to an end and both school and work await. Kick the autumn off with this playlist!
The 1920s. Helsinki. Live singing. Murder. These are four of my favourite things – all of which and more The Alexander Theatre offers Finnish musical devotees with their 2019 production “Iloisten Sielujen Hotelli”. Paradoxically, the performance was both thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining and painfully sunk in humdrum mediocrity.
Finnish music as a cultural export is currently blossoming at an exponential rate: for instance, our fennoscandic nation has finally heralded her first international pop star Alma, who is joining the ranks of other internationally acclaimed nordic singers such as Mø and Lykke Li.
An album creates a whole; a collection of songs that together tell a story much wider and complex than they would alone. It feels like nowadays I just tend to listen to individual songs and kind of miss the big picture that an artist or a band is creating with the whole of an album. But every now and then I’m lucky enough to stop, take a moment, and listen to the whole story instead of just hearing the beginning.
